By default, WebSite-Watcher embeds the Chromium browser. It is used to display changed bookmarks and in other areas, for example in the filter assistant. The Chromium browser can consume a noticeable amount of memory and system resources.

If you run WebSite-Watcher 24/7 on a server, or if you do not use the internal browser to view changed bookmarks, the Chromium browser is not required. As an alternative, WebSite-Watcher provides a lightweight text view that displays page content in a simplified format. This text view is not based on Chromium and uses significantly fewer system resources and less memory. It is used only in the main application interface. The check technology "Browser: Chromium" continues to use the Chromium engine for page checks.

WebSite-Watcher supports the following browser engines:

• Chromium-Browser
  Recommended if you open and read changed bookmarks within WebSite-Watcher. This is the best choice for most users.
  
  
• Text-View
  Displays page content in a simplified text format. It does not load the Chromium browser components and therefore uses fewer resources and less memory. This option is suitable if you run WebSite-Watcher 24/7 on a server and do not use the internal browser to read bookmarks.

Which Engine Should I Use?

Use the Chromium-Browser:

• if you regularly read changed bookmarks in the WebSite-Watcher user interface

Use the Text-View:

• if you run WebSite-Watcher 24/7 on a server
• if you rarely or never use the internal browser to view pages and instead read changed bookmarks in your system's default browser or by email

Command Line

A command line parameter is available to disable the Chromium browser engine.

This parameter can be used when you start WebSite-Watcher from the command line for automated monitoring.
